We went to Mesa Verde for our anniversary celebration this year. When Jim and I were on our honeymoon we went to Mesa Verde. This year we took Ben along. We had such fun learning about the ancient Puebloans, as they are called now. We even stayed at the motel in the park. It was like a cabin, very primative and no TV. No TV and Jim almost had a siezure because he spent two whole days without watching TV. We won't be staying there again! We had a picknic over looking the whole four corners area, went hiking, climed down a ladder into a kiva, and went to Durango for some food at Mongolian Grill and new shoes. Luckily we found shoes for everyone and were able to hike in comfort. We also visited the Museum of the Ancients outside of Cortez. They had a great display for kids. There were drawers underneath the displays where kids and adults could actually touch and handle pottery, arrow heads, awls, bones, and other things that were part of the Anasazi culture. Ben and I ground corn with a mano and metate and we also did some weaving on a loom. It was so cool. Mesa Verde is building a new museum and we are hopeful that they will do like the museum in Cortez and make it an interactive place for kids and adults too. We will have to go hiking and see more ruins this summer! Maybe we will go to the ruins around Cortez as I have never been to them before. Ben was so excited that he thinks he might want to be an archeologist when he grows up!
