Christmas 2011

Christmas was great this year. Benjamin had written a letter asking Santa for a red Lego train and he didn't disappoint. We spent the month with "Elfie", the elf Santa sent to watch Ben and make sure that he was a good boy. Benjamin even took Elfie to school in the surprise box. Ben was super excited that he got an iPod touch as I told him that he wasn't going to get one! Jim got his John Deere 720 restored to working condition. He was super happy too! I got an iPad and diamond earrings from Jim and Ben and that was exciting for me. Christmas was extra special this year because it fell on Sunday and we went to church and we were reminded with a beautiful performance from the choir that we were celebrating the birth of our Savior. Of course I cried with the singing of every song. We had a family dinner at my parents house to make a perfect Christmas day!

BEAUTIFUL BEN

I can't say enough of how I love the pictures that Brook Pehrson takes, she is so talented! Someday we are going to get family pictures taken by her! She took these beautiful pictures of our Benjamin!

I am training on the Ortho Clinical Diagnostics Vitros 350 chemistry instrument. I have learned quite a bit 0f new things and I wish I had the oppertunity to take the class when we had the Vitros 250. So now I can do my job better! Got to go now...

Polar Express...the tradition continues

Again we went to ride the Polar Express in Durango. What fun it is to ride the train in the winter at night and see Santa! This year we had Drew and Darrin Westcott and the Singer cousins, Stahli, Isley, Quincy and their parents. We had so much fun, Ben added to his jingle bell collection with another bell from Santa. The coco and cookie were so delicious and of course it was done in pajamas. Santa was so exciting to see. We will do it againg next year because we BELIEVE!

End of the vacay

We finished up our vacation to the San Diego area with a little stay at the Shilo hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. We did some Christmas shopping had lunch with one of my best friends, Shelli, and we went to Temple Square to see the lights. We rode in a horse drawn carriage all around temple square. The horse that pulled our carriage name was Lou! We very much enjoyed our outing with Lou and a look at the Christmas lights and nativity on the reflection pond. Very lovely sight and a good reminder of what Christmas is really about. The festivities brought the Christmas Spirit to us and helped us focus on the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

You can see it for miles around...

The San Diego Temple can be seen for miles around the area. It was such a beautiful and peaceful place. We got some spectacular pictures and we were the only ones there for a little while. We had our picture taken by some people from Utah. We stood out in front of this tree in the center of the entry area to the temple. The views of the temple are just gorgeous and we were glad we had a chance to see it in person.

San Diego Zoo

Look at all the funny animals in the zoo, including Ben Haller! We got to ride in a double decker bus! The San Diego Zoo is HUGE, but they have a bus and a tram that gets everyone around pretty well. We looked at so many different animals! We actually went to the Zoo on Thanksgiving day so it wasn't really busy and I can't remember how many times we rode the tram. It was a very entertaining day and we all learned new things about different animals!

SEA WORLD

We all loved Sea World. We saw two different kinds of dolphins and killer whales, seals, sharks and visited a giant underwater aquarium. We watched the dolphin show and at night we got to see the killer whale show with Shamu. One of the neatest things that we did was at the beginning of the Shamu show they asked that all the veterans and their families stand. So we stood up and before I had a good chance to look we were on the jumbo-tron screen in the front of the pool. Very exciting and emotional as everyone clapped and thanked the veterans for their service to this country. I get teary just thinking about it. The show was amazing! We rode to the top of a ride that lets you look out over the whole area, you can look over San Diego and then over to the ocean. We also had a cartoon drawing done as a family, it is the most hilarious thing I have ever seen ! We framed it and keep it in our dining room so we can remember to not take ourselves so seriously. Life can be funny and we really enjoyed our Sea World adventure!

San Diego Vacay part 2

We spent the day at the beach. We didn't plan on swimming but some of us did and actually got really wet. We found out that salt water doesn't dry. I can't really explain my feelings that I had just looking out at the ocean and the beach...it was beyond magnificant!

San Diego Vacation Day 1

We actually didn't plan to go to the Mormon Battalion site, but it turned out to be a great place to visit. We had gone to the WalMart to buy some groceries for our San Diego vacation. We wanted some lunch meat to make sandwiches and WalMart in San Diego didn't carry lunch meat...so bizarre to us! We went to the Food 4 Less at the suggestion of the employee at WalMart. While at the Food 4 Less we met four missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We talked with them a bit and wished them a happy Thanksgiving and one gave us a card with the address of the mormon bataltion site on it and told us to go and see it. We had a rental car so we went and it was great. We watched a movie about the history of the mormon batallion and we also panned for gold, and went to the top of the tower and over looked Old San Diego. We even got our picture taken together. We met some sister missionaries and they gave us a coupon to a Mexican restaurant that had a open air patio and open fire box. They had a mexican "dummy" out in front and Ben and Jim posed for some pictures with him! I will think about that dinner in the warm California air when there are feet of snow on our back patio. Old Town San Diego was also interesting and beautiful.

First Flight

We took a vacation, the first real vacation we have taken as a family since Benjamin was born. We went to Southern California. We stayed at the LaJolla Shores Hotel and ate at the restaurant on the beach there. This hotel was AMAZING. The hotel is right out on the beach and is so beautiful with a restaurant in the hotel that is on the beach too. We flew there and it was Benjamin's first airplane flight. It went pretty well all considered with Jim wondering why he always forgets to remove all the metal from his person before he goes through to metal detector and sets it off. He also got the body scan, luckily Ben and I didn't get scanned. I don't think they scan children anymore and the kids don't take their shoes off, just big people. We took some sand from the beach home in a empty plastic container but you would have thought it was a bomb when we got to the airport. The sand was in Benjamin's backpack as it was his and when they tried to x-ray it the sand didn't show through the x-ray, they thought something might be in the middle of the sand. I thought they were not going to let us take it but they put it through a scanner and let us have it, the sand did cause quite a stir. The San Diego airport was PACKED with people and there was a huge sign at the security check point that said "NO JOKING" about any possible activities or things associated with security. ALL JOKES are taken seriously and Jim always has to freak me out, I am sure we are going to be thrown out. He likes to complain loudly about whatever he doesn't like that is going on with security and I always get worried! When we flew home we went to check in at the San Diego airport, Jim and Ben had played in the ocean that morning and we had clothes from days past that were soaked with sea water. Sea water doesn't seem to dry as fast so the clothes were heavy. Each piece of luggage that is checked at the airport has to be a certain size and can't weigh over 50 pounds. That is why we had two bags because I knew that we couldn't fit everything into one bag and still weight less than 50 pounds. When we got to the airport in San Diego we had our two bags with the new bag having wet clothes inside. We had bought the new bag just for this trip and we had the old bag that we have had for many years. I set the new bag up on the scale and it weighted 59 pounds. The agent said it was $10 per pound over the 50 pound limit so I would need to pay $90 extra. We had already paid $50 each way for our two bags and I wasn't going to pay more! We decided to take the wet clothes out and put them into the other bag, but when we did that the zipper broke on the old bag. I was panicking!!! So the agent tapped it all up and Jim finally got it zipped up and off we went. When we landed we all stopped by the bathroom and then proceeded to the baggage claim. Everyone had gotten their bags off the carousel and only our bags were left. We went to pick them up and the old bag had come open and a pair of underware were hanging out! OH MY!!!, we are hillbillies (as in Jed and Jethro) and everyone at the airport knows it! I was so darn embarrassed but thankful that we had gone to the bathroom because I was glad only a few people knew this was our bag...this didn't seem to phase Jim at all probably because it wasn't his underware! Needless to say that bag went to the dumpster! Lesson learned- don't get your clothes(jeans)wet in the ocean if you are flying home and don't take sand (luckily we already have ours)!

On to ThAnKSGivinG!

Every year at Halloween we carve our biggest pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern. I love the smell of the pumpkin and we enjoy spending time together. Ben and I carved this pumpkin on the afternoon of Halloween! Carved pumpkins don't last too long and so it was soon time to throw jack away for this year and move on to the next holiday!

Veterans Day 11/11/11

Kind of a cool date to celebrate those who serve the United States of America during peace time and war in the military...11/11/11. Happy Veterans Day, I hope everyone takes a few minutes to think about our veterans that have served and those who are serving in the military, think about the sacrifices they make on an individual basis and the sacrifices their families make. My husband served in the U.S. Army, he was a part of the 101st Airborn division...the screaming eagles! Sometimes they were called the puking chickens! The military has its own language including whowa! I watched a televison program and about 1% of the population of the USA serves in the military. We are demanding a lot of 1% of our citizens. They protect the other 99% of us and we need to be greatful for their service. I also saw that it is upsetting for soldiers to come home and just hear everyone complain about their lives, not realizing how good we have it here in the USA because of those soliders that are willing to go into combat so we have the oppertunities and freedoms that we have. If you are thankful to live in the USA, thank a veteran! I will thank my husband today for his service to all of the citizens of the USA!

Jimmy D...

It was Jim's birthday. Benjamin wanted to have carrot cake, he loves it! Yes, I know he is very picky about what he eats, it is strange that he would love carrot cake! Maybe this is the only way we can get him to eat his veggies! Although he does willingly eat broccoli on occasion. It was a fun night of blowing out candles and celebrating another year together. Jim got hot sauces for his birthday. Jim loves hot sauce! I think Jim is kind of like hot sauce...somedays he is fiery, somedays a little smokey, and then there are days when he can torch you! TEMPER!!!! He does put a lot of effort into being nice when he feels grouchy and tired. We love him and are so glad that we have a dad and husband that takes good care of Benjamin and I and that we love with all our hearts!

SCarY ZoMBie

Ben had decided that dressing up as a cute pumpkin, Elmo, Thomas the Train, a handsome policeman, and a cute puppy were not what he was all about this Halloween. He wanted to be something scary! We looked through all the costume catalogues for a scary costume and he settled on a zombie. I felt a little sad that my boy is growing up and wanted to be something scary! No more fun cutesy costumes...well until next year! We went to the carnival at the school and he was in the costume parade. I learned quite a few things about some of the people of this community and what they feel is most important but I'll save that and keep it to myself. Lessons learned! I loved the cake walk and am thankful for all those kind people that sacrificed their time to work at the carnival, make treats, serve food, and let my kid have some fun. The Singers came and went to the carnival with us and for Ben and Isley it was so exciting, even more exciting than Halloween. Thanks to my sister-in-law for taking the kids trick or treating as I was on call and got called back to work. NEVER again will I be on call for Halloween either!!!

cATapULt~

When we go to Lagoon as a family, someone always rides the catapult! Nycole has ridden the past two years and last year Al rode, so this year Spencer rode it...I am sure it is a blast! You are launched into the sky in an open ball that you are strapped into! I am sure I will never go on the catapult...I couldn't even swing from the tree to the trampoline and drop when I was a kid. I was always too afraid I would get hurt. I have not ever seen anyone puke on the catapult and I am pretty sure that it should stay that way, hence I will not ever be going on the catapult and spare the crowds below! The catapult is not on my bucket list!

THEY'RE BACK...

Oh ya! My parents are back from their service mission to Nephi, Utah were they worked at the BYU Family History Library and in the Manti Temple. I am so thankful to have them back! They came home on my birthday, Oct. 5th and on Oct. 6th I called and asked my mom if she could watch Ben next week...she said yes she would. You never realize how much you still need your parents until they aren't there anymore. I am so thankful and appreciative of them and their sacrifices that they made to raise six children. They both have taught us and led by example. My dad can even play a pretty devilish Satan! He learned the part of Satan during his service in the Manti Temple! Now they need to take it easy for a few months and then I am sure my mom will have something else planned for them!
P.S. I can't believe my mom doesn't have earrings on in this picture! She ALWAYS wears earring...even earrings that are too shiny!

"Bling Bling" on a pin...

We have really put the pressure on Benjamin to earn the top place of "outstanding" at kindergarten, especially because Ben had to test his teacher and make sure that when she told him she was going to call his mom that she really was! So we let Ben know that we expected him to bring home an outstanding award. He almost made it last week when his teacher needed to leave the classroom and all the kids earned an outstanding award, except Ben and another kid because Ben and this kid were playing around and wrestling and smacking each other on the bum. I was beginning to wonder if it was possible for Ben to actually earn the outstanding award! Today was my birthday and guess what he brought home...YES!!! the OUTSTANDING AWARD. It is the best birthday present this mom has had in a long time...I am so proud of Ben! Now he will have "bling bling" on his clothes pin!! It may never happen again so I made him take a bunch of pictures!

FiShInG FuN!

We went fishing over memorial day weekend this year. Jim is the "pole fixer" guy. He always fixes our fishing poles and helps everyone fish. He taught me how to fish when we were first married. We used to go fishing almost every night in the summer before we had Ben, now we don't seem to have time to go fishing. I had forgotten how enjoyable and relaxing it is to fish. My Grandma Gerd used to take us fishing but I don't remember ever catching fish, maybe I just didn't pay attention. Or maybe I was too loud and had no patience! We like to use hand-tied flies but sometimes Ben uses bait. Jim is a good teacher, he went fishing with his dad and brother as a boy. Jim learned how to fly fish from his dad. Jim taught Ben how to cast his line and we even caught some fish. Ben reeled in his own fish, he was so excited! I am thankful for a husband who is willing to share his time and knowledge with us! Our cousin, Drew Westcott, came to visit us and he caught a water snake...keep that away from me!!!! I love the picture of Ben looking at his seaweed fish...he looks so disappointed!

new family pics

At our family reunion, Bryce, my brother and Al, my sister took pictures. I have put them all together and we had some printed. I thought they turned out cute, I especially love the one of Jim looking up at Benjamin and the one of Jim and I laughing and Benjamin looks puzzled! Some of these pictures really capture our true spirits!!!

Lagoon...Westcott Family Reunion 2011

Every year we have a little vacation together as a family. For the past two years we have gone to Lagoon. We all love it! It has been a very fun and exciting day for all of our kids. The cousins get play together and go on all the rides together. This year we had our family picture taken. We have some fun pictures to go with all the great memories. Tom, Jim, Grandpa, Bryce and Spencer took the kids on Rattlesnake Rapids. They all got soaked! Thanks to Tom for sparing them from getting completely soaked to the bone. Jim bought Ben a tee shirt after the soaking. We always try to get a shirt as a souviner to remind us of the fun we had. I am so greatful for my family. They mean so much to me, they are a giant support and I know I can always look to them for love and advice. Can't wait for next year, it is Amy and Todd's turn to plan the event!
P.S. Clayton Westcott was in attendance but is missing from this picture!

CAMPING

We bought a used RV camp trailer this summer. We had a small RV camp trailer that had just enough room for three midgets. Jim was always tearing up something, it was kind of like a bull in a china cabinet! If you know Jim very well you know what I mean. We have been looking for a bigger camp trailer for over a year and we found the perfect one at just the right price. It has a HUGE bathroom...my first concern is the bathroom. I don't like the airplane like bathroom that our little trailer has. I need to breath when I am using the pot! It also has a bedroom with a bed that isn't cramped. I can actually put my legs out! We went camping on the mountain over the Labor day weekend. I loved camping and so enjoyed the end of summer!

America, my home sweet home

"Victims of the World Trade Center terrorism attack will be remembered at a special ceremony on the 10th anniversary of the tragic event.
The long-awaited and much-debated National September 11 Memorial at the World Trade Center is set to open to the public on September 12, 2011, the day after the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that brought down the Twin Towers in 2001. The 9/11 Memorial will be officially dedicated in a special ceremony for victims’ families on Sunday, September 11, 2011 and is a remarkable tribute of remembrance and honor to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks at the World Trade Center site and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.
Entry to the 9/11 Memorial is free but a reservation is required through 911memorial.org, which opened for online bookings on Monday. According to the president and chief executive of the 9/11 Memorial, Joe Daniels, more than 1 million visitors are expected between September and December. “There is a tremendous demand to see the memorial site from around the world,” says Daniels, who explains the Memorial Museum attests to the triumph of human dignity over human depravity and affirms an unwavering commitment to the fundamental value of human life by demonstrating the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and its impact on communities at the local, national, and international levels.
Visitors will be allocated 45 minutes to see the memorial, a plaza that consists of two massive pools set within the original footprints of the Twin Towers. The twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest man-made waterfalls in the North America. Bronze parapets inscribed with victims’ names ring the pools, which are surrounded by over 400 trees, including the Peace Tree, which was recovered from the rubble on the site and nursed back to health. Construction of the seven floor underground museum and perimeter buildings, including the tallest building in the US, which began in 2006, continues and is expected to open in time for the 11th anniversary in 2012 with costs climbing up to $700 million.
Israeli architect Michael Arad, not originally from New York, is the designer of the World Trade Center Memorial, entitled “Reflecting Absence.” Arad won the ground-zero memorial design competition in 2004 when he was just 34, beating out 5,201 other contestants and with the support of Maya Lin, designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.
Once complete, the museum will house collections of diverse materials includes artifacts, photographs, audio and video tapes, personal effects and memorabilia, expressions of tribute and remembrance, recorded testimonies and digital files and websites related to the history of the World Trade Center, the events of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993, and the repercussions of these seismic attacks. StoryCorps is just one of the museum’s moving tributes, which recounts stories about the victims by friends, family, neighbors and co-workers providing intimate perspectives on the life and character of each person lost in the tragedy."

I copied this from an information site on 911. I am so grateful to live in the United States of America and enjoy the freedoms that we have. There are others that would like to see the USA fail and would do anything in their power to see that it does. Our Father in Heaven has promised us that if we are righteous and true to the teachings of Christ, that we will have a home of freedom. America, my home sweet home.

OH MY HEART ATTACK!

This morning was BAD to say the least! Yesterday we were almost late to school...well probably we were late. School starts at 8:15 AM on most days except Tuesday, it was Wednesday yesterday and my clock said 8:14 as Benjamin RAN to the door of the school. I was determined that today we would be on time! Benjamin watched Curious George this morning on TV and I yelled at him to eat his toast with butter with the crusts cut off, just like he demands his toast be, and drink his hot chocolate, which was at the precise temperature that he also demands. I yelled at him to get his clothes on and brush his teeth. I yelled at him to come and get his face washed and hair coombed. As we were leaving the house, Benjamin told me that he wanted to take a snack to eat on the bus. I told him he had to tell me that before we were leaving and that we had to leave and didn't have time to get a snack. He wanted to wear a jacket because it was a little chilly outside, he picked up the coat off the hook we have hanging by the door. I told him it was too heavy of a coat and he needed to go to his bedroom and get the jacket. I went to the truck and he got another coat out and came out the door, I yelled again that he needed to go get his jacket. He went into the house only to come out without any jacket on. I YELLED again, and went into the house and got the jacket from his room. He said he couldn't wear it because his backpack would not fit over it. So I made him take off the backpack and put on the jacket. By this time I was MAD! We drove to school and I proceeded to drop him off. As he got out of the truck, he forgot his backpack and I called to him to come back and get it. He came to the truck and then tried to put the backpack on as he was walking down the side walk, as he lifted the backpack to put one arm in out fell his toy gun!!!! HEART ATTACK for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He picked up the gun as I opened my door. He brought the gun back to the truck and I tried to make it clear that he CANNOT take a toy gun to school! He understood what I was saying, I am so thankful that I made him wear his jacket. Luckily the gun fell out because if it had not and he took that to school, he would be in BIG TROUBLE! I will be checking the backpack from now on and I don't care how late it is!!!!

What is a HERO...

I asked myself that question as I attended the memorial services for Jason Workman. Jason was a navy seal and a husband, father, brother, friend and son of my co-worker and friend, Rodney Workman. I thought about the sacrifices that Jason made, leaving his family to fight in Afghanistan and all over the world. The number of hours he spent training and working hard at his job overwhelms me; I think about the time that went into being one of the best in the world. I did not know Jason but my brother in-law and my sister did, they said he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I thank his mom, Betty, being a mother myself I cannot imagine that it could be easy to let my son volunteer for such a role as Jason did. It is important to remember the sacrifices that are made on behalf of every American. We have freedom and as we know freedom is not free...it comes at a price and that price is someone else's life. It truly is a heroic accomplishment to volunteer one's life for the sake of the United States of America. I thought a lot about how to raise a son to freely sacrifice all that he has and is in order to serve our country, our god and family. Rodney and his son Tim talked about a book that Jason would read to his little son Jax. The book, "What Little Boys Are Made Of" included a poem by Edgar Guest which made me think and shed tears. It says...
The Boy And The Flag
I want my boy to be the best, I want him to be great; I want him in Life's distant West, Prepared for any fate. I want him to be simple, too, Though clever, ne'er to brag, But, Oh! I want him, through and through, To love his country's flag.
We purchased the book and have read it to Benjamin. I too want my son to love his country's flag as Jason Workman did.

FIrST DaY oF ScHoOL

Ben went to "the big school" this year. He is in kindergarten this year, we were so excited. The best part of the first day was the new backpack. Ben's backpack has his name on it and it is just the right size for a little boy. I was amazed at how many moms were at the school taking pictures of their children. I don't know why I didn't think about it before because a lot of mom's want that first day of school pictures. After all moms spend tons of money on clothes, backpacks, and supplies for school, why wouldn't we want a picture of it all! This year is a learning experience for Benjamin's parents too. I love school time, it is nice to be in school again.

Benjamin's Birthday

It was Benjamin's birthday. I can't believe he is going to kindergarten this year. I love him so much and we are so glad to have him in our family. He went swimming with his Westcott cousins, Drew and Darrin, at the new Monticello Pool! He was excited to go swimming. We had a tractor birthday cake and of course he blew out candles. Where does the time go?

It's been a month...

It has been a month since the last post and what a month it has been! It started off with the 4th of July celebration. Benjamin was once again in the parade with the Singers and I decided to work that day but did make it to the fireworks. Next I had my inspection at work on the 6th and 7th and we did SUPER well! Our score was 99%, that is amazing and the amount of work and stress that went into it was amazing too! I am so happy it is over for another two years! Next came the rodeo in Nephi, Ut, the Ute Stampede Rodeo. Awesome rodeo, Ben and I stayed with the Singers in Richfield and visited with grandpa Winn and grandma Laraine in Nephi. I even got pulled over by the Nephi city cop! Thrilling for the three boys in the back seat! Isley said he stared out the window at the cop's gun! No ticket...thankgoodness!
Next came camping out in our new used camp trailer! YEA!!! Jim thinks the camp trailer might be too big, but I am sure it is going to be fine! Jim and Ben went camping and fishing on Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23. Next came Pioneer day and Jim and Ben went to the parade and ate a lot of candy. I was sick, next came a trip to the emergency room. I had my tonsils taken out when I was a little girl but they have grown back. So I have half tonsils!!! Yea for me, I had a very sore throat and fever caused by an infection in one of my half tonsils. Horrible, but I got some great care at the San Juan Hospital and Kamry and Dr. Fisher took great care of me. That about sums up JULY for the Hallers...wow can't believe it will soon be Benjamin's 6th birthday!
